Here is one of the photos of Wendell Berry from this past weekend, here speaking to a group in Louisville. (He was speaking with his daughter, Mary, and here was listening intently to what she was saying.) For those who care about such, the image of Mr. Berry was made with 3200 film rated 1600. I have to watch the grain, but it is a favorite.
I learned a lot in laying myself open to different experiences on my recent trip to Henry County and Louisville. This past Sunday morning, I bypassed beautiful cathedrals in Louisville (both Catholic and Episcopal) and attended a small multi-ethnic church trying to make a difference in its surrounding neighborhood. One of the best sermons I've heard in a long time.
I've always liked the idea of true parish churches. Among the work there is an after-school program for students and a pay-what-you-can restaurant. After the service I walked around the neighborhood. I never want to “take” photographs that would demean anyone. One woman was decorating the front of her house, and I complimented her (sincerely) and asked whether I could take a few photos. She was more than happy to oblige, and we had a long conversation, part of it about how proud she is to have a house, only two years away from paying off her Habitat house. It was a good learning experience.
