The terrible COVID pandemic has claimed another casualty, Russian rocker and actor Pyotr Mamonov, who passed away July 15. In the eighties, he was a cult rocker, founding the rock group “Zvuki Mu” (“Sounds of Mu”). After becoming deeply religious (he was a devout Orthodox Christian), he retreated from attention, moving to a small village in Russia, but came out of retirement to appear in Pavel Lungin’s 2006 film “Island.” It is a film I thoroughly recommend, the story of a man who has committed a terrible betrayal and sequesters himself in a community of Orthodox monks to find redemption and, we come to see, maybe an opportunity to make a kind of restitution. A beautifully composed, understated film. Go look for a copy.
